Appeal for Candidate Support
Dear Candidate,
As a candidate for the Rhode Island General Assembly, you have a unique opportunity to support meaningful, non-partisan election reform that benefits all Rhode Islanders. I am writing on behalf of Rhode Island Voters for Election Reform (RIVER PAC), a non-partisan political action committee dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and representative political system.
RIVER PAC is advocating for legislation that would modernize Rhode Island’s process for political parties to earn official recognition. The proposal seeks to:
- Reduce the threshold for party status from 5% to 2%.
- Expand the eligible races for party status beyond the Presidential and Gubernatorial elections to include all statewide and federal elections.
- Establish a pathway for parties to maintain status when they have an elected official serving in a partisan position.
This legislation is non-partisan and is supported by advocates from across the political spectrum. It also has the backing of the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s office, which testified IN FAVOR of House Bill No. 7766 when it was first introduced to the House Committee on State Government & Elections this past March. This legislation is designed to improve voter choice, reduce bureaucratic barriers, and ensure that more voices are represented in Rhode Island’s political landscape.
We encourage you to visit our website, riverpac.org, to learn more about this important legislation. While there, we ask that you complete a brief candidate survey (riverpac.org/survey) to share your position on the proposed reforms. By completing the survey, you will also be considered for a potential endorsement from RIVER PAC as a supporter of election reform.
This legislation is an important step towards building a more inclusive democracy, and we hope you will join us in supporting it during the upcoming legislative session. Thank you for your time and consideration, and we look forward to hearing from you.
